The 21^st Battalion was formed in March 1915 in Victoria, Australia. It formed part of the 6^th Infantry Brigade, which consisted of the 21^st, 22^nd, 23^rd and 24^th Battalions.

The Battalion fought at Gallipoli, with periods in Egypt before and after, and on the Western Front.
